honestly, my personal statement wasn't anything special. usual stuff -- how i arrived at wanting to be a filmmaker, what i bring to the table as a filmmaker, why that particular school. i didn't really do anything wacky or anything.

my treatment was about a feature murder/mystery/drama script that i'm still toying with.

Hi Soham,
I'm currently applying to UCLA (among other film schools), and your blog has been a major resource for me. Out of curiosity, I was wondering what your personal statement and film treatment were about. Feel free not to answer, if you'd rather not say.

Thanks!

mike,

i think that a business background would be fine for the producing program. i applied for the production program. production is the making of film -- directing, editing, cinematography, etc. the producer's program is for the business behind filmmaking -- fundraising, distribution, management, building the team, etc. so i think you're fine without a lot of film experience.

Hi Soham,

To echo everyone else, great blog! I'm just curious as to which program you had applied for? I am currently in the process of applying to UCLA's producers program and am just looking for all the information I can get. I know you mention that it seemed most of the enrolled grad students don't have much actual film experience, which I hope is true because neither do I. I was a business undergrad at Berkeley and had an internship with Disney/ABC so I have a good sense of the business side, but not much on the creative (which is why I want to go). Anyways, I have a treatment and a solid resume and I hope its enough!

In your experience, what are some of the things they look for in an applicant? Thanks!

Hi Ray,

That question sounds a bit out of my domain. I guess the best thing I would suggest is to look past the name and have him visit the campuses. He's also got to weigh out how much debt he's going to have after finishing. The numbers are pretty stark.

Hello Soham,
You have great blog. I am trying to convince my son to stay in Illinois or go to UT but he thinks he can afford UCLA/USC or NY schools on his own. He is not top in his class but is talented and innovative. It is our fault that we spoiled him as desi parents so he thinks he has unlimited amount of money which we don't because of business environment. Any suggestions about convincing him? We own property in Texas so he may get Texas residency and go to UT or any school in Illinois.
Thanks for your help.
regards,
Ray

hi jason,

glad that you found this useful. congrats on the ucla interview. like is said, if i wasn't a texas resident, there's a pretty good chance i would have gone to ucla. anyway, to answer your question, i enjoyed my visit at ucla. i did not wear a tie. i did take my work samples, but we never got around to watching them. but it's good to take them anyway, maybe take 5 copies, so you can leave it with the panel if they want to see it later. overall, just go prepared to talk about your interests as a filmmaker, your influences, and your previous experiences. the questions are easy, but it can be stressful when you're on the hot seat. you don't want to blank when they ask you to name some directors that influence you or some films that you like.

good luck!
